Benefits of Teflon™-coated Steel Springs
There are many benefits of Teflon™-coated steel springs. Teflon is made from polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). So whether you’re on the hunt for Teflon-coated springs or PTFE-coated springs, you’re in the right place!
That same non-stick coating that helps your morning over-easy slide right out of the pan and onto your toast is great for springs, too.
Unlike butter (which also helps those eggs do the slip and slide) Teflon can be applied as either a spray coating or powder coating. The coating is followed by a heat treatment to harden and lock in the protective finish. The type of coating, color, heat treatments, and thickness can be customized to match your spring needs.
What is Teflon?
Teflon is a registered trademark of Chemours. Teflon-based materials can be used to make a variety of goods that have a combination of mechanical, electrical, chemical, temperature, and friction resisting properties unmatched by goods made with any other material (teflon.com).
How Does Teflon work?
PTFE is a collection of carbon and fluorine atoms that are tightly chemically bonded. The close bond causes other atoms to be pushed away from the surface. The molecule is structured with fluorine on the outside, surrounding the carbon atom. This prevents the carbon from reacting with anything but fluorine, creating a very low coefficient of friction which allows things to slide easily across its surface.
Benefits of PTFE-coated Springs
What’s great for eggs (less friction) is great for springs (and chickens, for that matter). Teflon-coated springs are stronger, quieter, and last longer.
Teflon-coated springs also enable the smooth operation of whatever equipment or device they’re installed in. Naturally, this has the added benefit of prolonging the lifespan of products, lowering replacement costs, and improving customer satisfaction.
Teflon is heat-resistant (both low and high temperatures) as well as resistant to oil and water. Because Teflon is so good at repelling other substances it’s an excellent choice for springs that may come in contact with corrosive agents or extreme elements.
